Learning scripture may seem daunting. All those big words and hard phrases seem like too much for a little child to comprehend and regurgitate. I'm sure you have seen examples of children's Scriptures being edited down to short 4-10 word phrases. But the Bible says not to add to or take away from His Holy Word.
"Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you." Deuteronomy 4:2 KJV

I am convinced that children can memorize long Scriptures just as well as adults. It might require a bit more effort on your part. Here are some tips and tricks to help children memorize scripture.

Tip 1: Use Motions
To increase memorization effectively, incorporate various physical movements such as hand motions, body gestures, or even sign language into learning and memorizing the Scripture. Engaging your child in this way not only makes the experience more interactive but also reinforces the connection between the words or phrases and their meanings.

Tip 2: Play Music
Create your own songs or use popular tunes to fit the words of the Scripture. Practice it with your children. This method truly works because I still remember songs from my childhood that my family and I wrote together. Music has a unique ability to transcend time, making it an invaluable tool for education and spiritual growth. By incorporating music into your study of Scripture, you not only make the learning process enjoyable, but your children will carry those verses with them throughout their lives.

Tip 3: Explain Each Section
Children can comprehend way more than we give them credit for. Take the time to explain the words and phrases in the scripture passage. This helps with comprehension and memorization. The process of explaining Scripture becomes a collaborative journey of discovery, where both the adult and the child can learn from one another. Your child may ask you a question you may have never thought about. And because of these questions from your precious child, your own Bible study can deepen.

Tip 4: Read with Intonations and Rhythm
Reading the Scripture with a steady beat pattern while using inflections and tonal changes in your voice can add variety and creativity that will increase memorization.
The act of reading aloud transforms the experience from a mere recitation into a powerful act that can stick with both the reader and the listener for many years to come.

Tip 5: Practice Makes Perfect
Repetition is key to learning scripture. The children can repeat the verse aloud, say the verse with motions, or write the verse. If you are completing a mixture of these activities at least three times daily, you will see a drastic increase in your scripture memorization skills.
