Celebrating the Feast of Purim

The celebration of Purim was a time of joy for our ancestors, the Israelites, who were in captivity in Persia and Media. We faced near annihilation, but the Most High saved us. He used a sincere and honorable man named Mordecai and a beautiful Israelite woman, Esther, to influence the king's heart and prevent the destruction of our nation. This triumph is why we celebrate the feast of Purim.

Here are some tips for hosting Purim festivities which can be a delightful way to connect with friends and family and learn about our history. However, the key to any successful celebration lies in careful planning. Here’s a quick guide to help you get organized.

1. Find the Dates of Purim

Before you dive into the details, use the New Moon of the twelfth month then count 14 days from the first day ("fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly") Then choose times that work for you and your guests. Once the date is set, be sure to mark it on your calendar!

2. Create a Guest List

Choose the number of guests you want to invite. This will assist you in determining the size of the dining area and the amount of food to prepare. You don't need to invite a large crowd. Your family will appreciate your added effort too.

3. Choose a Theme

Since Esther resided in the palace of the Persian Media empire, I have selected inspiration that mirrors Persian culture. You are welcome to create your own theme too. Feel free to browse my Pinterest Board for inspiration.

4. Plan the Menu

Your menu should accommodate your guests’ dietary restrictions. Aim for a balanced meal that include appetizers, a main course, sides, and desserts. Below is my sample menu. If you are interested in downloading your own editable template click the image.

5. Decorate the Space & Table

The ambiance of your dinner party is crucial. Set the table according to your theme, using appropriate tableware, napkins, and centerpieces. Soft lighting, such as candles or string lights, can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. I've also created a Purim Pennant Banner & Signage.

6. Create a Timeline

To ensure everything runs smoothly, develop a timeline for the day of the party. Include time for shopping, food prep, cooking, and setting up. This will help you stay organized and reduce last-minute stress. Additionally, I've prepared a three-day event schedule.

  • Blessing Bags

  • Gift Exchange

  • Movie Night

  • A Night with the King (This is not included in the Invitation because it is a private event for you and hubby).

  • A Royal Feast

  • Shabbat Worship Service

7. Prepare for Entertainment

Consider how you’ll keep your guests entertained. This could be as simple as a curated playlist, board games, or even a fun trivia quiz related to your theme. A little entertainment can break the ice and keep the energy high. I've created an activity book that has enjoyable activities for kids ages pre-k-6th grade.

8. Enjoy the Celebrations

Decide on a finishing time, and if something isn't completed, just let it be. On the day of the celebrations, remember to relax and enjoy yourself. Your guests are there to have a good time, and your enjoyment will set the tone for the evening. Don’t stress over minor details; focus on the company and the experience.

Conclusion

Planning a three-day celebration may seem daunting, but with some organization and creativity, it can be a rewarding experience. Follow these steps, and you’ll create an enjoyable atmosphere for your guests, making your dinner party a night to remember!
